About Clingmans Dome Visitor Center
Clingmans Dome Visitor Center is the highest elevation information center in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at 6,300 feet in elevation. It’s open from April 1 to November 30 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Be sure to stop in before you head up the half-mile, paved walkway to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower. Exhibits at the visitor center provide great information on the rare spruce-fir forest ecosystem at this highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Clingmans Dome, at 6,643 feet in elevation, is also the highest mountain in the eastern U.S.
To access Clingmans Dome Visitor Center and Observation Tower, turn off Newfound Gap Road (US Highway 441) at 0.1 mile south of Newfound Gap. It’s 7 miles to the parking area, restrooms, and visitor center. Clingmans Dome is about 23 miles from Gatlinburg, TN and 25 miles from Cherokee, NC.
